MONTERREY, Mexico - Lindsay Seeman of Newmarket, currently tuning up for her first Olympic Games, finished fourth in the women's 200-metre backstroke at the World Junior Swimming Championships.
Zuzanna Mazurek of Poland won the gold medal in 2:12.56 with Elizabeth Pelton of the U.S. second in 2:13.53 and Karolina Urbanska of Poland third in 2:13.83. Seeman was seventh entering the last turn but roared back into medal contention finishing fourth in 2:14.14.
At 15, Seeman will be one of the youngest athletes on the Canadian Olympic team. The race in Mexico was her most important of the meet as she qualified for the Games in the 200 backstroke. She was hoping to fare a little better.
"I wasn't overly pleased," said Seeman about her final. "My strategy was to hold back in the first 100 and save a little bit for the last 50. But my third 50 was slower than I would have hoped and that's what really hurt my race."
