How your GTA athletes did today

August 9 roundup:

– Michael Barry of Toronto finished ninth in the gruelling 245.4-kilometre men's cycling road race, 16 seconds back of Samuel Sanchez of Spain, who won the gold in 6:23:49.

– Fencer Olga Ovtchinnikova of Toronto advanced to the round of 16 in the women's individual sabre before getting eliminated.

– Toronto's Michael Winter joins his Canadian teammates in 10th place with a score of 123.70 after the dressage portion of eventing competition.  Competition continues this evening and resumes Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. (Beijing time).

-- Martha Henderson and Jennifer Provan of Toronto and Katie Abbott of Sarnia, Ont., sit in second place overall after two of 10 races in the Yngling class.

They ended the day trailing only a boat from Great Britain that has five point at the early stage of a competition that ends with the medal race Aug. 16.

Chris Cook of Toronto, a Whitby native, is fourth among 26 entered in the Finn class, behind boats from Poland (five points), the U.S. (seven) and Great Britain (11). The Royal Canadian Yacht Club sailor placed eighth and third in his two races for 11 points, likewise the first of the competition's 10 before the medal race Aug. 16.

-- On the archery field in the men's individual ranking rounds, Crispin Duenas of North York was 16th in a field of 64 with 664 points while John David Burnes of Toronto was 50th with a score of 644. Elimination rounds begin August 11 a 11 a.m. (Beijing time).

-- Oshawa-born Mike Brown finished 1st in his heat in the 100M breaststroke with a time of 1.00.98 - a personal best - but failed to advance to the semi-final. Alexandra Komarnycky of Toronto finished 8th in her heat  in the 400 IM with a time of 4.46.98.

-- Canada's women's soccer team goes away with a point after tying China in their second outing at the Olympics to bring their record to 1-0-1 tied with China for top spot. They have a break now before meeting Sweden on Tuesday August 12 at 5 p.m. (Beijing time).
