BEIJING -- Wayne Fernandes of Mississauga and British Columbia’s Connor Grimes each scored two goals to propel Canada to a 5-3 field hockey victory over South Africa.

Captain Robert Short had the other goal.

The Canadians improved to one win, one draw and three losses with the victory over the winless South Africans.

Both teams will play for 9th-12th in the second phase of the competition starting Thursday.
