Clarington's school board seeks student trustee

March 12, 2010

CLARINGTON -- The search is on for a new student trustee to serve on the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board for the 2010-11 year.

The Student Leadership Group, which includes students from all secondary schools throughout KPR, will once again choose the student representative to sit on the board. Applicants must be full-time KPR students at least 16 years of age. Those under 18 will require parental permission and must consult their principal to ensure the position will have a positive impact on their regular school program.

Applicants must send their resume and an essay outlining their interest in the position to Charlotte Filip, vice-principal of East Northumberland Secondary School, by Tuesday, April 6. Candidates will offer a short presentation to, and be interviewed by, the Student Leadership Group April 13.

"The student trustee holds an important and valued position," KPR chairwoman Diane Lloyd said. "The student trustee brings concerns and suggestions of our students to the attention of the board, and ensures we are aware of students' perspectives on day-to-day educational programs and initiatives."

This year's representative has been Aiden Tombs, a student at Clarington Central Secondary School.

"It is important that students have the opportunity to have their voices heard," he said. "As student trustee, I offer a report to the board at each regular meeting, report back to the Student Leadership Group, communicate with my peers and participate in a variety of committees and projects."

The student trustee attends and participates in all board meetings. Though the student does not vote on issues, he or she can inform trustees of students' views on specific issues before votes take place.

The new student trustee's term runs from Aug. 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011.

Complete application packages, with full instructions, are available in schools, and more information is available by e-mailing Ms. Filip at charlotte_filip@kprdsb.ca.
